Diana Rotaru • Romanian composer (b. 1981, Bucharest). She studied composition with Ștefan Niculescu and Dan Dediu at the National University of Music, Bucharest, and with Frédéric Durieux at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. She has attended various specialist courses: Acanthes (2008), Voix Nouvelles (2002 and 2006), the Bartók Seminar. She received a number of major awards: the ISCM-IAMIC Young Composer Award (Vilnius, 2008), joint First Prize at the George Enescu International Composition Competition (2003 and 2005), the Irino Prize (Japan, 2004). She has held creative residencies at the Cité des Arts, Paris (Romanian Cultural Institute George Enescu grant, 2007), at the Villa Sträuli, Winterthur (2011, with two portrait concerts given by the TaG ensemble), and in Vienna (2015, with a grant from the Austrian Federal Chancellery and KulturKontakt).
Diana Rotaru has composed chamber and orchestral music for multimedia and dance performances, music for short films, and a chamber opera. Her music explores various creative directions, such as the hypnagogic, imaginary folk music, and humour. In recent years, as arts director of the SonoMania ensemble and main manager of CIMRO, she has been involved in promoting new music in Romania. She currently teaches at the National University of Music, Bucharest.
