Short biography

Nicolae Bretan • Romanian singer, opera director, and composer (b. 1887, Năsăud, 1887 – d. 1968, Cluj). Most of his musical work is in vocal genres.

His operas include Luceafărul (The Evening Star) (1921), a setting of Eminescu’s poem of the same title; the musical drama Revolt of the Clay Man – Golem (1924; the opera Heroes of Rovine (1934), based on Eminescu’s Third Letter; the opera Horia (1937); the opera Arald, based on Eminescu’s The Ghosts. Nor should we overlok his more than two hundred lieder for voice and piano to poems by Eminescu, Goga, Arghezi, Heine, Lenau and others.
